It has been a challenging year.

It is a common sentiment I hear from many people over the months.

The signs and symptoms of this VUCA madness have been repeating themselves over the years. They are getting in our face lately and more to come in 2020. Which means, it is going to be exciting, fulfilling and rewarding for those who work on the vital aspects of personal mastery through a coaching methodology .

Common impacts of the VUCA

From the observations and feedback we gathered, we noticed some underlying patterns on how VUCA is impacting us.

  • Over-reliance on our mental domain

Most people rely on their mental capabilities trying to make sense of the changes that are happening. As a result, they tend to become overly stressed, burnout and feeling stuck. As you’ll discover later on, emotional intelligence can also impact us.

  • Doing too much

People tend to jump into action out of the need to control or desperation. Often, this is a sign of reacting to situations. Hence, they always seem to be busy or caught up in fire-fighting the changes in their lives.

  • Not doing enough

This is the other end of the spectrum where people remain in their position of passiveness. When they couldn’t cope any more, the natural response is to shut down, do nothing or to avoid the issue.

  • Fear of becoming obsolete

People are feeling the threat of becoming obsolete as the changes around them surpass their capabilities. They are feeling the pressure to step up. Most people fall back on their comfort zone, even though they know it isn’t going to last.

Now that you are aware of the challenges, I’m about to share with you three keys to set yourself for perpetual growth for 2020 in this 3-part series. These are the strategies that have helped transform the lives of thousands of our practitioners.

The core ingredient for personal and professional growth

Ask any high-level athlete and they’ll tell you that at a certain point, techniques and tools don’t matter — after a certain point. At the very highest levels, what separates 99% athletes from 99.99% athletes is the ability to master their psychology.

And yet, most people focus on opportunities outside of themselves. They get distracted by the next big thing or the “in” thing that is trending.

A lot of people worry about things that will change – what is going to disrupt the economy, the technology, the country, their jobs and their life.

Only a few people count on the areas that aren’t going to change – our ability to master ourselves.

That’s your foundation to thrive in the VUCA. In other words, the fundamentals of personal mastery never change.

Strengthen your inner game by developing self-certainty

Personal development is a buzzword. It is vague and abstract for many. Yet, by raising self-mastery, we increase confidence. That gives us self-certainty in uncertain times in terms of our performance and effectiveness at work and in life.

So then, what truly supports growth and self-certainty in this fast-changing world? Here’s what we’ve found from a recent online seminar that we conducted.

Emotional mastery tops the list of development that people want to hone because they affect our decision-making and relationships.

However, that is only the tip of the iceberg. There are four variations of self-certainty to work on in order to thrive in the VUCA world. This is where you transform your blocks, such as fear, success, comfort and lack of self-worth into resourcefulness to move forward confidently.

Whole-person development by harnessing multiple intelligences

How can we develop our untapped potential by accessing other domains of our abilities such as our emotional intelligence, physical intelligence and spiritual intelligence? This is where you expand your resourcefulness, given the limited resources such as time, people and money.

    Recondition ourselves through self-awareness

How can we develop sensory and emotional awareness of our biases, habits and filters to expand our perspectives? There are about 200 cognitive biases that affect our decision-making. With self-awareness, we can then recondition our thoughts, emotional and physiological patterns to respond to change in a focused and strategic manner, rather than being haphazard about it.

Energy management to step up to increasing demands

This is about raising our confidence and managing our energy to be more proactive, to be more efficient in using our energy and to sustain our efforts. Our ability to manage our energy well can help us meet the demands in our personal and professional lives.

Develop our neuro-capabilities to be agile and adaptable

How can we facilitate new habits, mindset shifts, emotional mastery and spiritual alignment to be agile and flexible to change? This includes upgrading our capabilities to influence others elegantly, to manage information, deliverables and relationship with people synergistically. I’ll be covering these in the upcoming series.

In the next article, I’ll cover extensively on developing your self-certainty through enhancing your ability to influence others.
